J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 First Show & Sale of Suckler Calves. Sale of OTM/Cast Cattle, Stirks, Calves & Store Cattle, 2nd October 2025.

CALVES

100 calves forward today with trade remaining similar to that of recent weeks. Topping today at £940 was a British Blue bull from J&B Morley, Appleby, with others at £880 from Bambers Farms, Thurnham and £810 from J Brown, Barrowfield. Charolais bulls sold to £880 from AK&BM Robinson with Aberdeen Angus to £710 from J&B Morley, Appleby. Longhorns sold to £600 from AK&BM Robinson with Fleckvieh to £570 from EW&RM Towers, Hornby. Thirty day old bulls reached £520 from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg with two week old Limousin to £400 from B&MJ Nelson, Haversham.
Heifer calves saw a more selective trade, reaching £810, £800 and £790 for Charolais from AK&BM Robinson, Arkholme. Blues sold to £750 on three occasions from J Brown, Barrowfield, J&B Morley, Appleby and Bambers Farm, Thurnham. Aberdeen Angus sold to £710 again from J&B Morley. Younger month old sorts reached £620 from A Pickthall, New Hutton and £600 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth.

CULL / CAST CATTLE
Another entry of cull cows filling the pens pre sale, with 85 penned and all selling to an average of 255p/kg. The best of the beef cows sold to 354p/kg and £2765 for a Limousin cross from PJ&ES Rogerson, with others nicely 290p/kg to 320p/kg and £2050 to £2400. Dairy cows peaked at 299p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from RJ&D Holden with others selling to £2357. Medium parlour types were 240p/kg to 260p/kg, with harder worked 210p/kg to 235p/kg. OTM heifers saw Aberdeen Angus cross selling to 329p/kg and £2352, with dairy heifer to 294p/kg and £1825. Steers sold to 329p/kg and £2171. Stock bulls in abundance today, selling to 304p/kg for British Shorthorns with another British Shorthorn £3121. Most bulls were 255p/kg to 285p/kg.

STIRKS
Plenty of interest in stirks with steers selling to £1490 for British Blue cross from B Robinson, with other yearlings £12890 to £1450. Younger beef steers were £950 to £1150. Diary steers sold to £1180 for Holstein Friesian. Heifers sold to £1210 for ten month old British Blue cross with other younger heifers £840 to £920. Bull stirks saw British Blue cross selling to £1420, with recently weaned dairy bulls to £960 for Montbeliarde and £540 for Holstein Friesian.

SUCKLER CALVES

Cleared for Take Off – Suckler Calves Fly at Junction 36.

Up, up and away. Suckled calves hit cruising altitude from the word go at today’s sale, with trade taking off and never looking back. From lightweights to the stronger end, the entire section was met with sky high demand from buyers circling the ring eager to land the best types. Vendors enjoyed a smooth flight with no signs of turbulence as prices soared well above expectations.

Bull calves topped at £2240 from Messrs Gorst of Gilpin Farm. The same good home had another at £2220. Bullocks topped at £2140 for a 9m old British Blue from Messrs RC Wharton. The Champion bullock from TW & C Shepherd, Underbarrow sold for £2060 for a Limousin at 7 months old. Other Limousin bullocks sold to £1980 from MW & M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell. Further 7 month old bullocks sold to £1920 from both TJ McGarva and GC & GW Taylor. 6 months old Charolais bullocks topped at £1880 from T Longton & Son. Limousin suckler heifers hit £1800 again from Messrs TW & C Shepherd. British Blue heifers sold to £1760 from TW Gorst.

STORE CATTLE

A fantastic trade was also met for Store Cattle as they continue to be in extremely high demand. A 20 month old British Blue heifer from S Whitehead sold for £2360, the same home had a Limousin heifer of similar age sell for £2200. 2 year old Limousin bullocks from AJ & H Clark sold up to £2230. The same home had a further pair at £2120. Charolais bullocks at 17 months old sold for £2120 from MT Howarth. 20 month old Aberdeen Angus bullocks sold to £2030 for a pen of 3 from Messrs A & B Pickthall.

Our next sale of store cattle is in two week’s time and features dispersal of 50 ‘Black Baldie’ Aberdeen Angus x Hereford Cows with Aberdeen Angus & Hereford x calves at foot from J & J Beary Farming, Gaythorne Hall.
